The Google Pixel 6 Pro is currently sparking discussions due to unusual behavior. Users report spontaneous restarts occurring without prior warning. No error message appears, complicating troubleshooting and raising questions about the cause. One affected user has examined their smartphone’s behavior more closely and found clues to a possible trigger.
Issue Could Lie in Temperature Monitoring
According to the online magazine “AndroidHeadlines,” Reddit user Oshadhaviduranga has thoroughly documented the incidents. According to their findings, the so-called Thermal Management Unit, or TMU, could be responsible for the restarts. This component monitors the smartphone’s temperature to prevent damage from overheating.
If the device reaches a critical temperature, the TMU can automatically trigger a restart. This process occurs directly at the hardware level. Apparently, neither the operating system nor the user receives a specific notification, leaving the actual reason for the restart initially hidden.
Restarts Despite Relatively Low Temperatures
According to the Reddit report, it is particularly striking that the affected smartphone was neither unusually warm during operation nor to the touch. Technical specifications indicate that the threshold for a TMU-triggered restart is 115 degrees Celsius.
However, the evaluation of log files in the device’s bootloader revealed something different. The internal sensors recorded temperatures between 56 and 57 degrees Celsius at the time of the restart. These values are significantly below the known trigger threshold. This discrepancy raises the suspicion that there might be an error in temperature detection or processing.

So Far, Only the Pixel 6 Pro Appears Affected
According to current knowledge, the behavior occurs exclusively with the Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16. Other models in the Pixel series have not shown similar issues so far.
However, it cannot be completely ruled out that other devices might be affected. Both the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6a also use the Tensor-G1 chipset. Therefore, it is conceivable that these models could exhibit similar malfunctions.

Additionally, the Pixel 6 series has now reached the end of its support period. Therefore, there is also discussion about whether the problem could be related to the age of the devices. How many smartphones are actually affected is currently unknown.
What Users Can Do Now
There is no official statement from Google yet. Those who observe similar restarts on their Pixel 6 Pro should report the incident to Google Support.
Providing as precise information as possible about the time of the restart, the specific usage situation, and any available temperature values can be helpful. Such details could help narrow down the cause of the problem and prepare a possible fix.
