Google simplifies photo backups through its Takeout export service. A new feature aims to ensure that users will need significantly less time for backups and won’t have to repeatedly download the same files.
Users Save Time and Storage in the Future
Those who wanted to back up images from Google Photos faced a recurring problem. Even if only a few new photos had been added since the last backup, Google Takeout would export the entire photo collection again with each operation.
This led to long wait times, especially with extensive libraries. At the same time, numerous duplicate files were created because already backed-up images were downloaded again and again. For many users, this made regular data backups unnecessarily cumbersome.
New Feature Remembers the Last Export
Now, Google is introducing a new export feature for Google Photos. The company calls it “Incremental Takeout,” which translates to “incremental data export” in English.
The innovation ensures that Google remembers the last export. After an initial full backup, only new or changed photos are considered in subsequent downloads. Already exported and unchanged images do not need to be downloaded again.

At first glance, the change seems manageable, but it can bring noticeable advantages in everyday life. Those who regularly store their photos on an external hard drive or NAS will need less time for backups in the future. Additionally, storage requirements decrease as identical files do not repeatedly end up on the target system.

Google also offers the option to perform exports automatically at regular intervals. The desired frequency can be set directly during setup.
This allows photo backups to be largely automated. Users do not have to manually initiate the export each time new images are added to their collection.
Google Eliminates Weakness
Takeout has long been available as a tool for exporting personal data. However, in the area of Google Photos, the previous method was increasingly seen as outdated.
The new feature is initially available exclusively for photos. The prerequisite is that only Google Photos is selected within Takeout. With this change, the company eliminates a frequently criticized drawback of its export service. For many users, data backup is now much closer to what they have been wishing for years.
