“The Flintstones” are among the most well-known animated families in television history. Now, the franchise is set to make another leap to the big screen. Behind the project are Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson, who are developing the film through their production company Open Invite in collaboration with Warner Bros.
Gosling relies on a familiar supporting actor
The reboot is particularly interesting because of its planned focus. According to the industry magazine “Deadline,” instead of Fred Flintstone and his family, Bamm-Bamm Rubble (German name: Bamm-Bamm Geröllheimer) will be the central character. The character is known as the adopted son of Barney and Betty Rubble from the original series. In the new film, Bamm-Bamm is set to be an adult.
This portrayal wouldn’t be entirely new: In the animated series “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show,” which aired between 1971 and 1972, the character was depicted as a teenager. He attended school with Pebbles, had his first job, and played in the band Bedrock Rockers with her.

A television icon returns
The original series premiered on U.S. television in 1960. It is considered the first animated series to secure a prime-time slot. The focus was on Fred and Wilma Flintstone, their daughter Pebbles, neighbors Barney and Betty Rubble, and their pet dinosaur Dino.

The characters have been adapted for the cinema several times. In 1994, a live-action film was released with John Goodman as Fred Flintstone and Rick Moranis as Barney Rubble. The two films grossed around 401 million U.S. dollars worldwide. In 2000, another cinematic adventure followed with “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas,” set before the events of the first film.
Many questions remain
Whether Ryan Gosling will appear in front of the camera in addition to his role as a producer is currently unknown. As the project is still in the early stages of development, there is no information yet on the cast or a possible release date.
Further details about the plot are also unknown, as a screenwriter is reportedly still being sought. Whether the return to the big screen after more than 25 years will be successful remains to be seen.
