The whole world is talking about “The Odyssey” by director Christopher Nolan. Now the film has made history. Since its release in June, the blockbuster has grossed more than $1.34 billion, surpassing the previous leader “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the most successful R-rated film.
World Record Despite Restrictions
In Germany, the epic received a FSK 12 rating, making it relatively family-friendly. In the U.S., however, the film was given an R rating. Viewers under 17 can only see it in the company of a parent or guardian. This is usually considered a disadvantage at the box office because it limits the potential audience.
This makes the success all the more extraordinary, as reported by “PC Games.” R-rated films traditionally reach a smaller audience in the U.S. than productions with lower age ratings. Many major blockbusters are deliberately produced to appeal to the widest possible audience. “The Odyssey” achieved its high box office despite these restrictions.

Not the First Record
The film was also awarded the “Golden Screen” by the German cinema association HDF KINO. The award goes to productions that attract at least three million viewers to theaters within 18 months. “The Odyssey” reached this mark in just about a month.

Additionally, the Homer adaptation is now Nolan’s most successful film in terms of worldwide box office. Previously, “The Dark Knight Rises” from 2012 held this record. With around $264 million worldwide on its opening weekend, “The Odyssey” also marked the strongest opening in the director’s career.
Success Thanks to “Oppenheimer”
According to several media reports, Nolan himself sees a connection between the success of “The Odyssey” and his previous hit “Oppenheimer.” In interviews, the director explained that the extraordinary success of the Oscar-winning film gave him the opportunity to undertake the elaborate adaptation of the Homer epic.
“Oppenheimer” grossed around $1 billion worldwide and won several Oscars, including Best Picture. According to Nolan, both the high box office earnings and numerous awards bolstered confidence in further major projects.
