For some time now, Amazon has been testing the option to pay for orders in cash in various regions. This service is aimed at customers who prefer not to pay by credit card and would rather settle amounts directly. In one country in particular, cash payment seems to be gaining interest, as Amazon is now rolling it out nationwide there.

Traditional Payment at More Than 35,000 Locations

The country in question is Italy, where customers can now pay for Amazon orders in cash nationwide for the first time. As early as the end of 2021, Amazon introduced this payment option in collaboration with Western Union. However, through a new partnership with PuntoLis, the network has been expanded from 5,000 to more than 35,000 payment points—and is now available to all Amazon.it customers.

PuntoLis is an Italian payment and service network through which you can pay bills, make transfers, reload cards, and use other financial services in local stores. The network includes kiosks, tobacco shops, bars, and collection points, among others.

Amazon has previously tested similar partnerships with Western Union in the U.S. and other countries under the name PayCode. However, starting in April 2026, this service will only be available in Colombia and the Philippines.

How Cash Payment Works at Amazon

Customers proceed with orders on Amazon.it as usual, but have the option at checkout to select “Paga in Contanti nel Punto Vendita più vicino” instead of credit cards or other payment methods. A link with a list of nearby payment locations also appears directly.

After confirming the order, customers receive an email with a barcode and a numeric code, which also explains the next steps. Payment must then be made within 72 hours at a PuntoLis or Western Union location. The code is presented there, and the outstanding amount is paid in cash.

Customers receive a paper receipt, and Amazon subsequently informs them via email about the payment receipt and sends a shipping confirmation. Amazon automatically cancels the order if no payment is received after the 72-hour period. In this case, a new order is required.

Not All Products Payable in Cash

Excluded are used warehouse items (Amazon seconda mano), digital content such as e-books or MP3 files, and gold coins. Prime subscriptions, One-Click purchases, and Amazon gift vouchers are also excluded from cash payment. No additional fees are charged for using the service.

The return of an item paid for in cash is possible under the usual Amazon conditions. However, the refund is issued in the form of a gift voucher for Amazon.it and not in cash.

Cash payment is not yet available everywhere. In a brief test, TECHBOOK was able to set the payment method as standard, but could not select it at checkout. According to Amazon, this is because the feature is being rolled out gradually, and all Amazon.it users will be able to access it in the coming weeks.
