Microsoft is working on changes to the search function of Windows 11. In the future, users will be able to more easily determine which content is displayed in the Start menu. The focus is particularly on integrating web results and suggestions from the Microsoft Store.

Between Criticism and New Control

The search in the Start menu is one of the most controversial areas for many users of Windows 11. Instead of displaying only local files or installed programs, the operating system has so far also shown content that many users find unnecessary. Those who wanted to get rid of these results previously had to make changes in the registry.

Now, Microsoft is testing a much simpler solution. The company is responding to ongoing criticism of the search function and its previous operation.

Web Results Can Be Disabled

According to a report by the online magazine “WindowsLatest,” a recent preview version of Windows 11 includes a new setting. Participants in the Windows Insider Program can find this in the “Privacy and Security” section within the settings.

With the new button, the search can be adjusted to consider only locally stored files and installed programs. Internet results will then no longer appear in the Start menu’s search view.

Microsoft Store Also Disappears from Search

Additionally, Microsoft is introducing another option. This allows users to disable results from the Microsoft Store as well.

So far, Windows has shown relevant applications from its own app store in the search. Users receive installation suggestions, including a download button, if the programs match the search query. Those who do not want to see these recommendations will soon be able to hide them with just a few clicks. This gives users more control over which content the search function considers.

When the Changes Might Appear

It is not yet known when the new features will be available to all users. Microsoft is currently working on fixing numerous vulnerabilities in the operating system. Therefore, the new search options could be part of a larger update. A possible candidate is the system update 26H2, expected in the fall. However, there is no official date for the introduction of the changes yet.
