Microsoft is working on a comprehensive overhaul of the Windows search function. The goal is to guide users more quickly to programs, files, and settings. Currently, the results list can be expanded with web content, recommendations, or other entries alongside the actual hits. According to Microsoft, this is set to change. The company is currently testing a new version of the search that is more clearly structured and aims to deliver more relevant results.
More Clarity in Search
With the redesign, Microsoft aims to improve the presentation of search results, according to a post on the Windows Blogs. Previous search queries will be displayed on the search homepage, allowing users to quickly revisit terms they’ve used before.
The search results themselves will also be more clearly labeled. Windows will more distinctly indicate whether a hit is an app, a file, a system setting, a website, or an offer from the Microsoft Store. Additionally, Microsoft has adjusted the order of system settings to make sought-after functions easier to find.
Improvements for Apps and Files
In addition to the presentation, Microsoft is also working on the actual search function. The app search will soon be better at handling typos. Missing or additional letters and incomplete search terms will be less problematic.
Furthermore, Microsoft is revamping the file search. Matches will be displayed after entering just two characters. An additional preview will help users select the desired document more quickly.
Moreover, Windows aims to more reliably include local files, cloud content, and data from connected storage locations in the search. Areas like “This PC” and the recycle bin will be easier to find as a result.
Users Gain More Control
Another change involves the integration of online content. In the “Privacy and Security” section, users will be able to decide whether the search should include results from the internet and the Microsoft Store.
Disabling these suggestions limits the search to installed programs, saved files, and system settings. Those who keep online suggestions enabled will continue to see internet content. According to Microsoft, Windows will increasingly favor local hits.

Launch Initially for Insiders
Initially, the updates will only be available to selected participants of the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft is rolling out the changes gradually through the experimental channel, so they won’t be immediately available on all test systems.
The company has not yet announced when the revamped search will be available outside the experimental channel.
