The search bar in Windows 11 often struggles with unreliability. Users who don’t know the exact file name frequently have to manually navigate through folders to find files. The overview is further complicated by online search results.
Improvements Through May Update
However, Microsoft has promised improvements and is taking steps to make Windows 11 more user-friendly. According to the online magazine WindowsLatest, the optional May update with the identifier KB5089573 is set to address these issues and enhance local search. Another improvement is being tested in the Insider Program.

Faster Search Results
The integrated search in Windows 11 is getting an update that delivers results after just two characters are entered. This is achieved through improvements in indexing, allowing the search to switch to turbo mode and offer the most likely results first. This feature is being rolled out gradually, so some users may still have to wait.
Substring Search in Testing
Currently, Microsoft is also testing a substring search in the Windows Insider Program. This feature allows parts of file names to be found even if the full name is unknown. For example, terms like “notes” or “April” can be enough to locate the file “MeetingNotesApril.” Frequently used abbreviations can also be searched this way.
The exact timing of when this feature will be generally available is unclear. Microsoft has not yet commented. It is unlikely that the company will do so, as it is more about the technical infrastructure. However, a launch in fall 2026 with system version 26H2 is possible.
