Without announcement and apparently without explicit consent, a new application is currently appearing in the Start menu for some Windows 11 users. The app is called “OneDrive Photos” and expands Microsoft’s cloud service with an additional image management feature.
The main novelty is the standalone interface. While OneDrive Photos in Windows 11 was previously accessible mainly through File Explorer or the Windows Photos app, there is now a separate application for images from the cloud and local storage.
Still in Beta, but Already on Many PCs
Interestingly, OneDrive Photos is still officially marked as a beta. However, in practical use, the application already seems quite mature. It is based on Microsoft’s WebView2 technology and essentially runs as a web app within Windows.
This has advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, Microsoft can quickly provide new features. On the other hand, the app is heavily reliant on an internet connection. Offline, only locally stored photos are available.
Usable Without a Microsoft Account
As the online magazine “Windows Latest” reports, the app fundamentally works without logging in. Even then, it recognizes existing image folders on the PC and offers typical functions for viewing, editing, sharing, or printing photos.
It becomes more interesting with a Microsoft account. Then OneDrive Photos also accesses content from the cloud and unlocks additional features. This includes an AI search that can search photos based on image content or text.

Face Recognition Included
Microsoft also integrates optional person recognition. If users activate the feature, the app analyzes faces in photos and automatically groups similar people together.
The company points out that the data used for this could be classified as biometric information in some countries. According to Microsoft, this information is not shared with third parties. Nevertheless, the combination of cloud connectivity and automatic image recognition is likely to spark discussions among privacy-conscious individuals.

Removal is More Complicated Than Expected
Those who do not want to use the new application quickly encounter a problem. OneDrive Photos cannot currently be uninstalled separately.
The app is directly linked to OneDrive. Therefore, users must remove the entire OneDrive client from their Windows system if they want to get rid of the photo app. This can be done through the Windows settings under “Apps” and “Installed Apps.”
