Microsoft plans to reverse a controversial change regarding OneDrive Photos. The new photo app appeared on numerous Windows 11 devices, even though many users neither installed nor requested it. The criticism was accordingly significant.
The lack of choice was particularly problematic for many users. Additionally, OneDrive Photos could not be removed separately. Those who wanted to get rid of the app had to uninstall the entire OneDrive application.
Uninstall Feature to Be Added Later
Microsoft told the online magazine “WindowsLatest” that the distribution occurred through the existing OneDrive client and a widespread rollout was not originally intended. However, why the app was installed without the explicit consent of many users remains unclear.
At least the company is responding to the criticism. A separate uninstall option is announced for September 2026. Users will then be able to remove OneDrive Photos without having to give up the cloud service.

The case highlights a familiar problem at Microsoft. New features are often rolled out before the company adequately informs about changes. With transparent communication, much of the frustration could likely have been avoided.
