Apple ventures into the world of foldable smartphones with the iPhone Duo. The device combines two screens in one housing and is designed to serve as both a classic iPhone and a compact tablet replacement. During a demonstration in Cupertino, Apple showcased numerous solutions aimed at reducing the common weaknesses of many foldables. However, the model does not come without compromises. Apple relies on a new solution against the visible crease
One of the biggest challenges of foldable smartphones is the crease in the middle of the display. Apple takes a unique approach with the iPhone Duo. The display has a matte surface, which significantly reduces light reflection. As a result, the crease is much less noticeable visually.
Additionally, the construction is designed to ensure the screen unfolds as flat as possible. Support ribs and titanium plates are used for this purpose. According to tests, the indentation is barely noticeable when swiping over it with a finger. A scratch-resistant coating protects the surface from damage. Apple even allows the use of the Apple Pencil (USB-C) on the device.
New operating concept utilizes the wide format
Unlike many other manufacturers, Apple has not only developed new hardware but also adapted the operation. A unique interface for iOS 27 was created, specifically designed for the wider format of the iPhone Duo.
Several control elements are located on the right edge of the display. There, users find quick access to the lock screen, the app dock, and the search function. The front camera of the outer display is also housed in this area. Additionally, a symbol combines information on reception, Wi-Fi, and battery status.
When opening the device, the iPhone Duo supports the simultaneous use of two apps. The 7.6-inch inner display can also be used in portrait mode. Compatible applications automatically adjust to the respective orientation.
Under-display camera and compromises in photo equipment
Apple integrates a selfie camera in both the outer and inner displays. The camera in the unfolded device is located under the display to preserve as much screen space as possible. According to tests, this solution is particularly suitable for group calls.
On the back, there is a dual camera consisting of a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera, each with a resolution of 48 megapixels. A two-times zoom is available in Apple’s so-called “optical quality.” However, there is no dedicated telephoto camera.
The housing measures only 5.2 millimeters when unfolded, making the iPhone Duo the thinnest iPhone to date.

Face ID is missing in the iPhone Duo
Users will have to do without Face ID in the new model. There is no space for the necessary sensors in the slim housing. Instead, Apple reverts to Touch ID. According to the company, this method is statistically less secure than Face ID.

The variable aperture used by Apple in the iPhone 18 Pro is also missing in the iPhone Duo. There is no slot for physical SIM cards either. Additionally, Apple has omitted the Action Button. However, the camera shutter remains.
Prices, colors, and sales start
The iPhone Duo is available in “Starlight” and “Midnight” colors. In Germany, the price starts at 2,299 euros for the version with 256 gigabytes of storage. For the two-terabyte variant, Apple charges 3,799 euros.
Pre-orders are available from October 16 at 2 p.m. The regular sales start on October 23.
