Google is expanding the phone app for Pixel smartphones to include an integrated voicemail feature. The function is already available in several English-speaking countries and is now appearing in Germany. Currently, only users of the app’s beta version can try it out.
Calls Are Automatically Answered
Calls often reach users in situations where they cannot respond immediately. If a call goes unanswered, it is often unclear later whether the unknown number was a crucial tip, a follow-up question, or just a telemarketing call.
This is exactly where Google’s new feature comes in. The phone app on Pixel devices can take missed calls, store incoming messages, and also provide their content in text form. The feature has been available in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia since October 2025. Now, the function is launching in Germany.
Setup Is Done Directly Through the App
The voicemail can be activated in the phone app without additional applications. In the settings, the menu item “Record Message” appears.
There, the function can be turned on. Additionally, there is the option to record a custom greeting message. After that, the system works similarly to a traditional voicemail. If a call is not answered, the caller can leave a message.

A similar concept already exists with Apple. The live voicemail on the iPhone also makes left messages visible as text.

Messages Do Not Have to Be Listened To
An advantage of the function is that users do not necessarily have to play back incoming messages. Instead, they can read directly in the call list what the conversation was about.
This allows for a quicker assessment of whether a short response is sufficient, a callback is necessary, or no further action is needed. This can be especially helpful with unknown numbers, as the significance of a call does not have to be judged solely by the phone number.
Availability Initially Limited to Beta Version
According to consistent reports, the voicemail is currently only visible in the beta version of Google’s phone app.
When Google will release the feature for all users is not yet known. Therefore, it remains unclear when all Pixel owners in Germany will be able to access it. Only with a broader release will it become apparent whether Google will adopt the feature unchanged or make further adjustments by then.
