Exactly one week before the unveiling of iOS 27 at the WWDC 2026, Apple quickly released a bug fix update in the form of iOS 26.5.1. This update addresses a known issue affecting only certain iPhone models.
iOS 26.5.1 Fixes Charging Issue
At the end of April, TECHBOOK reported on a curious charging issue with the iPhone 17 series and the iPhone Air. When deeply discharged, the devices could not be turned on again—at least when charging with a cable. Apple is now providing the update to iOS 26.5.1 specifically for these models to address this problem.
On social media, several users reported that their iPhone would not turn on after discharging. Even the typical battery icon did not appear when connecting the USB-C cable. In the comments, they quickly found a working workaround: Wireless charging via MagSafe revives a deeply discharged iPhone in just a few minutes.
Owners of affected devices can install the update in the settings under “General” > “Software Update.” The release notes state: “This update fixes an issue that occurs with a small number of users and can prevent wired charging of iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models when the battery is nearly empty.”

Should You Install the Update Immediately?
According to Apple’s support page, iOS 26.5.1 does not include security patches for known vulnerabilities. The update is exclusively aimed at owners of iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, who should install it right away to prevent the charging issue.
If you do not own an iPhone from the 17 series or an iPhone Air, you are not affected. Apple does not provide the update for any other models.
iOS 27 Is About to Be Unveiled
With the upcoming unveiling of iOS 27 at the WWDC 2026 on June 8, Apple is gradually winding down the development of iOS 26. Currently, iOS 26.6 is still in progress and is already available as a beta version. It is likely to be the last or one of the last iOS 26 updates to receive new features.

The focus will then shift to iOS 27 and the rollout of new features that Apple has already announced—including the new, smarter Siri. Apple will release the first beta of iOS 27 immediately following the WWDC keynote. The final version typically follows in the fall.
