Google is rolling out Android 17. As usual, the company’s own Pixel smartphones will be the first to receive the new operating system. All models from the Pixel 6 onward are supported. With the update, Google introduces several new tools for multitasking, gaming, security, and screen recording. Additionally, the company is making some changes to the interface and aims to improve performance and battery life.
New Features for Multitasking and Recordings
With Android 17, Google expands multitasking capabilities. New are the so-called “Bubbles.” This feature allows apps to open in small, floating windows that overlay other applications. Users need to press and hold the respective app icon. The programs then appear directly over other open windows.
This is particularly useful on smartphones with large screens. Devices like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold also receive a dedicated bubble bar. Android collects all currently open apps there, making it faster to switch between different tasks.
Google also adds “Screen Reactions” to Android 17. This feature enhances screen recording. Users can insert their reactions via the selfie camera directly into videos without opening other apps.
The concept is reminiscent of content from social networks such as Instagram or TikTok. Reaction videos can be created directly on a Pixel smartphone. Additionally, Google is revamping the screen recording controls. The tools for recordings and annotations will appear in a new toolbar.
Foldables Get New Gaming Mode
Owners of foldable smartphones also receive new features. Android 17 includes a special gaming mode for foldables. The system uses the entire screen area and splits it in a 50-50 ratio.
The actual game runs in the upper part of the display, while the controls appear below. According to the article, the display resembles the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP. Those who prefer using an external controller can display the game in full screen.
However, the feature is not immediately available. It is already included in Android 17 but will be activated in the coming months.
Google Expands Theft Protection
In the area of security, Google is also introducing new tools. Apps will only have temporary access to precise location data or specific contacts upon request. Additionally, the “Mark as Lost” feature within the “Find My Device” app allows a lost or stolen smartphone to be further secured with biometric data. Even if someone knows the passcode, disabling tracking should not be easy. Stored data is also expected to be better protected.

Google is also improving threat detection. The system is expected to block harmful apps and fraud attempts more frequently. Stricter requirements for PIN entries are also being implemented. Android will reduce the number of possible incorrect attempts and extend the waiting time between multiple wrong entries. This is intended to make guessing passcodes more difficult.

More Performance and Interface Changes
In addition to new security features, Google is also changing the system’s interface. App names can be hidden on the home screen. Android 17 also expands parental controls and adds additional options for volume and dark themes.
Under the hood, Google is introducing new rules for RAM. Apps are expected to use less RAM, which the company believes will lead to better performance and longer battery life. Additionally, more efficient memory cleaning is expected to enable more stable frame rates in games.
The new version of “Gemini Intelligence” is not yet part of the initial release of Android 17. According to Google, the AI will be available for compatible devices later.
These Pixel Models Will Receive the Update
Google is rolling out Android 17 along with the Android Feature Drop for June 2026. All current Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 onward are supported. Those who do not receive an automatic notification can manually start the update. Users need to open the “System” section in settings and then “Software Updates.”
For the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Android 17 marks the last major Android update. Both smartphones will only receive security updates until October 1, 2026.
