Apple is not exactly known for its affordable prices. Even typically inexpensive accessories are often sold at high prices. When it comes to accessories, many think of cables, watch bands, or phone cases. However, the list also includes an unexpected product—a water bottle for nearly 90 euros. TECHBOOK explains the story behind this unusual offering.
A water bottle is certainly not among the typical gadgets you would expect to find in Apple’s online store. However, it is listed three times in the “Accessories” section, each with a different capacity. The water bottle is not made by Apple itself but by the third-party manufacturer HidrateSpark. It is designed not only to keep beverages cool but also to support the health functions of the Apple Watch and iPhone as a useful accessory. We took a closer look at how it works and whether it’s worth the purchase.
Overview
What Can the HidrateSpark Pro Steel Water Bottle from Apple Do?
The manufacturer HidrateSpark also operates its own online store in the U.S., where it sells its water bottles in various colors, designs, and sizes. The company was founded in 2014 by two students after graduation, following a friend’s illness due to insufficient fluid intake. HidrateSpark was created as a project combining hardware, software, and psychology to help people drink more water and develop lasting hydration habits. Today, the water bottles are also sold worldwide by Apple.
The HidrateSpark Pro Steel is a vacuum-insulated stainless steel water bottle that, according to Apple, can keep beverages at temperature for up to 24 hours. Additionally, the product features built-in LED lights at the base of the bottle to remind users to drink by lighting up accordingly. The gadget can also be connected to other Apple services to track fluid intake.
HidrateSpark Pro Steel calculates the required fluid intake based on individual body data. Tracking is done via a Bluetooth-enabled sensor built into the bottle, which then forwards the data to the corresponding app or Apple Health. The sensor is located at the bottom of the water bottle and can be removed with a twist if desired.
Also included is a light ring that serves as a reminder to drink regularly throughout the day. Users can set various light patterns, which work with a rechargeable battery and an accompanying fast-charging cable.

Compatible with Apple Devices
The sensor puck tracks how many milliliters you drink and records this via the app on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. On the devices themselves, the water bottle works in conjunction with Apple Health. Alternatively, it is also compatible with health apps from Fitbit, Google Fit, and Withings Health Mate.
HidrateSpark also offers its own app that can sync with the bottle. After creating the mandatory user account, you can set an individual hydration goal (such as daily water intake) via Apple Health. The actual fluid intake is then measured by the bottle and sent back to Apple Health. There, the data is processed and can be manually adjusted later if needed. This can be useful if you want to add drinks from other containers, for example.
To properly use the HidrateSpark Pro Steel, an iPhone with iOS 14 and an Apple Watch with watchOS 5 are required. Then, you can connect the Apple water bottle with almost all other products from the company.
The Apple water bottle package includes the following items:
- HidrateSpark Pro Steel (capacity: 946 milliliters)
- standard lid
- additional straw lid
- rechargeable battery (charged via USB port)
Is the Apple Water Bottle Worth It?
Ultimately, the water bottle fulfills two essential functions. On one hand, it can keep beverages cool for an extended period while on the go; on the other hand, it reminds you to drink and sends the daily water intake via Bluetooth to Apple devices or the Health app. It’s a useful feature, but it comes at a price. Stainless steel bottles that keep drinks cool on the go can be found online for less than ten euros. And those who already use fitness apps or even a smartwatch or fitness tracker can be reminded to drink through these sources. Ultimately, with the Apple water bottle, you’re mainly paying for the data analysis and reminder function directly on the bottle.
However, there are people who need to monitor their daily water intake due to chronic conditions and require exactly these features. In such cases, the HidrateSpark Pro Steel could be useful.
