Every month, numerous new movies and series debut on Disney+. In addition to premieres directly on the platform, exclusive in-house films are also available on the streaming service. Recently, “Lilo & Stitch” was released on Disney+. The blockbuster was already a mega-hit on the big screen and continues its success story.
“Lilo & Stitch” Breaks Disney+ Records
On September 3, 2025, “Lilo & Stitch” premiered on Disney+. Prior to that, fans could watch it in theaters, where it became one of the most successful films of the year. With a worldwide box office of $1.04 billion, it is only the second title of the year to surpass the magical billion-dollar mark (following the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2”). The streaming release is also off to a strong start.
As The Wrap now reports, “Lilo & Stitch” garnered 14.3 million views on Disney+ in its first five days. This information reportedly comes from internal data from the Mouse House. It is said to be the second most successful streaming premiere of a Disney live-action adaptation ever—only “The Little Mermaid” from 2023 was more successful. Disney calculates views by dividing the total streaming time by the film’s runtime.
“Lilo & Stitch” Success Reflects on Other Titles
Also noteworthy is how the popularity of the “Lilo & Stitch” film on Disney+ affects other offerings. During the same period, viewership numbers for the original 2002 animated film and other related content also increased. In total, these accumulated up to 670 million streaming hours worldwide.
This year’s “Lilo & Stitch” film is a new live-action adaptation of a previously animated Disney classic, which the company has been successfully bringing to theaters for several years. The adventure about an alien stranded on Earth and a Hawaiian family is the fifth remake of this kind to gross more than $1 billion at the box office. The others are “Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King,” and “Aladdin.” A sequel is already planned.
