YouTube has revamped its Premium Lite subscription. Previously, the cheaper version offered mainly one advantage: You could watch many videos without ads. There were no additional perks. But that’s changing now.
For a long time, the regular Premium subscription for 12.99 euros per month was the only way to use YouTube without constant ad interruptions. It wasn’t until 2025 that the platform operator introduced the cheaper Premium Lite option in Germany. It costs less than half but also offers fewer features. While ads are removed from many videos, they still appear on some content. Ads run before and after music videos here as well. Additional convenience features were completely missing until now. YouTube is now making improvements.
YouTube Premium Lite Gets Download Feature and Background Play
As the company announces in a blog post, Premium Lite users will soon receive two additional features. Videos can now be downloaded and watched offline. This is convenient if you don’t want to use mobile internet on the go or have a poor connection.
Additionally, background play is now possible. This means a video continues to play even if you close the app or lock the screen. These features were previously only included in the full Premium subscription. However, YouTube points out that the updates apply only to most videos. The company does not provide further details on what this specifically means.
With the update, Premium Lite becomes significantly more attractive. The main difference from the more expensive subscription is now the lack of access to YouTube Music, YouTube’s own music streaming service. Those who already use Apple Music or Spotify are unlikely to miss this feature. While the regular Premium subscription also offers completely ad-free access (including music videos), a higher bitrate for better audio and video quality, and optimized user options, whether these advantages justify a monthly surcharge of 7 euros is up to each individual to decide.
Impact on Users Remains Unclear
With the upgrade of the Lite subscription, YouTube is likely targeting users who have been using ad blockers to avoid ads. At the same time, the company might risk some Premium members switching to the cheaper plan. According to its own statements, the rollout of the new features starts immediately. In the coming weeks, they will gradually become available in all regions where Premium Lite is offered.
