YouTube is currently testing new options for paying members. While the prices for the premium subscription remain unchanged in Germany, the platform increased fees by up to $2 in the U.S. in early April 2026. At the same time, new features were introduced there to serve as compensation.
According to the online magazine “9to5google,” premium users currently have access to two additional features, which can only be tested temporarily. The new functions are not yet active by default. Users must first enable them themselves. There is a “New Test Features” section in the menu for this purpose. Only after activation are the options available.
The test is currently running mainly on Android devices, according to the report. However, at least one of the features has also been discovered in the iOS app. This involves automatic adjustment of playback speed.
Time Savings in Tutorials
The feature independently adjusts the pace of a video. YouTube cites cooking videos as an example. Less important scenes play faster, while the app automatically slows down for central content. However, there are limitations. The feature currently only works with English-language videos. Additionally, the clips must be technically compatible. If not, the “Automatic Speed” option does not appear at all.
New Controls for On-the-Go
The second feature is called “On-the-go.” It aims to simplify operation when watching videos on the move. As soon as the smartphone is moved during playback or placed in a pocket, the app displays a reduced interface. Important controls like the timeline, play button, and download option are highlighted. The design is inspired by the YouTube Music app. Activation occurs either automatically through motion detection or manually.

Those who want to try the new features need to hurry. According to the report, they will be deactivated again on April 27, 2026. During this time, YouTube is collecting feedback to further develop the features. Whether and when they will be permanently integrated into the app is currently uncertain.
