Despite all the competition in the streaming market, Netflix has long been considered the top player. But what exactly does the streaming service offer and at what price?
There are only a few companies that have managed to make their brand synonymous with something–Netflix is one of them. With more than 260 million subscribers worldwide, the service is among the most successful streaming platforms ever. TECHBOOK introduces Netflix and provides an overview of subscription structure, prices, and other noteworthy details.
Overview
Company History and Significance in the Streaming Market
Founded in 1997, Netflix is one of the oldest streaming providers, especially among those still in existence. What many don’t know: The model was actually inspired by the then-emerging company Amazon. However, instead of starting with books like Amazon, Netflix wanted to enter the market with movies–specifically with DVDs, which also launched in 1997.
In 1999, Netflix introduced its first flat-rate model, after initially allowing users to rent content like a traditional video store and have it mailed to their homes. After initial startup difficulties, the DVD business became very lucrative in the early 2000s, prompting Netflix to take the leap into online streaming in 2007.
An important component was the recommendation system “Cinematch,” which suggested new content based on users’ viewing habits and ratings. Additionally, starting in 2011, Netflix began offering self-produced content. These so-called Originals remain one of the most important pillars for the streaming service. Series and films like “Stranger Things,” “The Crown,” “Red Notice,” or “Wednesday” are flagship offerings. The concept also served as a model for other streaming services.

Subscriptions and Prices at Netflix
After offering three subscriptions for years, Netflix was one of the first streaming services to introduce a plan with ads. After a period with four options, the service gradually removed its affordable basic plan, leaving the following subscriptions available for customers:
- Standard with ads: 4.99 euros per month, Full HD, two simultaneous streams
- Standard: 12.99 euros per month, Full HD, two simultaneous streams
- Premium: 17.99 euros per month, 4K, four simultaneous streams
In addition to video quality and the number of possible streams, Netflix subscriptions differ in a few other aspects. For example, the Premium plan is the only one that offers 3D audio. Subscribers to the ad-supported plan cannot book an additional subscription, which was introduced with the ban on account sharing and allows users to share their accounts beyond a single household. A free trial subscription has not been available from the provider for a long time.
What to Watch on Netflix
The streaming service focuses, among other things, on young adults. Looking at the list of new releases each month, you’ll find many genre series and films. But, of course, there are plenty of other types of content available as well.
As mentioned earlier, the service’s numerous original productions are a key factor in Netflix’s success. No other platform can offer as many exclusive titles. The U.S. provider has also been instrumental in establishing streaming productions at major award ceremonies. For several years now, the streaming service and especially HBO have been competing for nominations.

- Under the “Membership and Billing” tab, you’ll find the option “Cancel Membership.” The streaming service will then direct you to a corresponding page.
