Spotify is tightening control over its Premium Family plan. A new QR code verification is intended to prevent people from different households from sharing a family plan.
New QR Code to Verify Household
Members of a Premium Family plan may soon need to prove they actually live under the same roof as the plan manager. Spotify is implementing a QR code check to ensure both individuals are at the same location during verification.
The plan manager displays a QR code in their Spotify app, which the other member scans with their smartphone camera. The code changes every few seconds, so a simple screenshot won’t suffice. After the prompt, there are seven days to complete the verification.

Missing the Verification Comes with Consequences
If users miss the deadline, they are automatically removed from the Family plan and downgraded to the free, ad-supported version of Spotify. This increases pressure on members who have been using the discounted plan outside of a shared household.
Additionally, a 12-month ban on Family and Duo plans is threatened. During this period, affected users cannot join any such plan. Those who wish to continue using Spotify without ads would need to switch to a regular individual plan instead.
Users Already Looking for Loopholes
The new control doesn’t seem entirely foolproof. Users are already discussing a possible method to bypass the verification in online forums, involving a video call with screen sharing.
The dynamic QR code is transmitted to a second screen and then scanned from there with a smartphone. This could potentially fake the required proximity to the plan manager. Whether Spotify plans further technical measures against such circumvention attempts is not clear from the available information.
