Anyone who shares Spotify with children knows the problem: The kids’ favorite songs suddenly appear in your own recommendations, dominate the year-end review, and create chaotic playlists. To address this, Spotify is now introducing a feature that was previously reserved for paying Premium customers.
Managed accounts are now available to users of the free, ad-supported version of Spotify. The streaming service announced this in a blog post. This allows parents to offer their children a personalized Spotify experience without needing an additional subscription.
Personal Playlists and Recommendations for Kids
With managed accounts, children gain access to many features of a personal Spotify profile. These include personal playlists, individual music suggestions, and a separate year-end review in the popular Spotify Wrapped.
The main advantage is the separation of listening habits. Music, audiobooks, and children’s songs no longer influence the parents’ recommendations. At the same time, the personal Spotify review remains free of the kids’ most-played songs.
More Control Over Content
In addition to separating accounts, Spotify is also expanding control options for guardians. Content deemed inappropriate by rights holders can be hidden. Parents can also block specific songs or artists.
This creates a more controlled environment without adults having to forgo certain music. The settings apply exclusively to the child’s managed account.

Focus on Data Protection and Child Safety
Spotify has also equipped the new children’s accounts with additional protective mechanisms. Managed profiles are private by default and cannot be found through the search function. Also, messaging features are not available there.
Videos and the short Canvas animations that accompany many songs are also disabled. This aims to better protect younger users from inappropriate content.
Spotify Aims to Improve the Family Experience
With this expansion, Spotify aims to provide each family member with a more personalized music experience. Children receive individual recommendations, while parents retain their own listening statistics and suggestions.
For users, the clean separation of profiles is particularly appealing. Those who have regularly found children’s songs in their personal top songs or recommendations now have a simple solution with managed accounts. The new feature is being rolled out immediately for free Spotify accounts.
