Searching for hours but finding nothing? Netflix is testing a new AI feature called “AI Discover” that not only recommends based on past viewing habits but also considers what users are currently in the mood for.

AI Search Instead of Endless Scrolling

Netflix is expanding its TV app with a new section called “AI Discover.” This experimental AI search is designed to help viewers find a suitable movie or series more quickly. However, the feature is initially available only to a small group of testers.

Unlike the familiar Netflix recommendations, users can incorporate their current mood or situation. AI Discover offers various themes, such as light entertainment, horror, a family movie night, or short content for limited free time. Trends and recently watched content can also play a role.

Recommendations Can Be Further Refined

After choosing a theme, Netflix presents suitable movies and series. Then, more specific categories appear, allowing users to narrow down the selection step by step. If the suggestions aren’t satisfactory, users can opt for “Something Different” to see a different compilation.

New is also a feature for directly adjusting recommendations. Next to “Play” and “My List,” an additional button appears with the titles. Users can indicate which recommendations they want to keep or which should not appear in the future. According to Netflix, AI Discover remembers these decisions and adjusts its suggestions accordingly. AI is also used in creating the displayed themes.

Netflix Turns AI Discover into a Testing Ground

Netflix explicitly views the new section as a test lab. The streaming service wants to explore which new forms of content search actually work for its members. Feedback and usage will determine which features are improved, discarded, or possibly later become part of the regular Netflix interface.

At launch, AI Discover is gradually being made available to English-speaking Netflix users in the U.S. on supported TVs. Those in the test group will recognize the feature by the new “Discover” entry in the top navigation of the TV app. In the coming weeks, Netflix plans to expand access to more members. The company does not mention a date for Germany in the current announcement.
