New series regularly emerge in the Star Trek universe. However, not every project proves successful in the long run. One production is now sparking discussions and an unexpected ending.
The decision has been made: “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will not continue. Although the second season has already been produced, the series will end after two seasons. This means the project is ending much earlier than originally planned.
Early End Despite High Expectations
The Star Trek brand is generally considered a reliable success in the industry. A large fan base often ensures that new spin-offs have good chances. Paramount+ also seemed confident about “Starfleet Academy.” Even before the first episodes were released, a second season was ordered. However, as confirmed by Paramount along with CBS Studios, according to Variety.com, the series will be discontinued after the second season.

Mixed Reactions Among Fans
The series is received differently within the fan community. It centers on young cadets at a newly established space academy. Some viewers see it as a welcome change. Others, especially longtime fans, find little appeal in its direction. This is reflected in the ratings: Critics give it 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience scores only 51 percent.

No Specific Reason Given
The first season premiered in March 2026, and the second was only recently completed. Yet, the end has now come. Paramount+ does not provide a specific reason. Instead, the streaming service highlights its expansion of the Star Trek universe in new ways. The company also thanks the team led by showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau.
The decision has met with confusion among the cast. Karim Diané, who plays the Klingon Jay-Den Kraag, expressed his feelings in an Instagram video. He loves “Starfleet Academy” and is very proud of the second season, which he believes is even better than the first. Raoul Bhaneja, who portrays Chancellor Kelrec, reacted similarly, stating that it’s hard not to feel bitter about the end. Alongside new faces, well-known actors like Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, Robert Picardo, and Tig Notaro were also part of the series.
