Video game adaptations have been all the rage in Hollywood for several years. Now, a Netflix series based on “Minecraft” is the next project in the works.
When “Minecraft” hit the market, its massive success was not anticipated. However, it didn’t take long for the so-called sandbox game with building blocks to gain significant momentum. Today, it is the best-selling video game of all time with 300 million units sold to date. Now it’s time for the brand to conquer other areas of the entertainment industry–and to this end, following a highly successful movie, a Netflix series based on “Minecraft” is in the works.
Overview
Video Announcement Confirms Netflix Series for “Minecraft”
Just in time for the game’s 15th anniversary, the provider announced the Netflix series for “Minecraft” with a short clip. It initially shows a Creeper, a malevolent figure from the game world. The setting then shifts to a massive cave with lava streams and flying bats, with the large, distinctive Netflix “N” in the center.
The video quickly garnered numerous views. The description reads: “The best-selling game of all time and the world’s largest streamer team up to bring you a brand-new Minecraft Netflix animated series!”
What We Know So Far About the “Minecraft” Series on Netflix
Both the video and the description lack detailed information. The most important detail, however, is that it will be an animated series. As reported by the usually well-informed U.S. industry magazine “Variety”, the project will feature a brand-new story with previously unknown characters. The storyline aims to showcase the world of “Minecraft” in a new light.
The currently sparse information naturally invites speculation. Fans are already expressing the desire for Jesse or Steve from the games to appear. Some also hope for a return or adaptation of “Minecraft: Story Mode”–a narrative-driven spinoff of the original game.

Which Stars Will Be Involved?
Some are already considering which star should take on a voice role. Suggestions include U.S. comedian Kevin Hart (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”) and the well-known voice actor and actor Troy Baker (“The Last of Us”). Given that there is now also a movie, it wouldn’t be surprising if one of the stars simply reprised their role in the series. Jack Black as Steve would be an option, especially since he has often worked as a voice actor.
However, one YouTube user hopes that Marvel star Chris Pratt will not take on a part–likely because he recently voiced Mario in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and Garfield in “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.” Opinions on his casting and performance are divided.

These Studios Will Produce the “Minecraft” Series
The streaming service will undertake the project in collaboration with Mojang Studios from Sweden, the developers of the game. For the computer animations, WildBrain from Canada will be responsible.
The Canadian studio has already produced several animated series for Netflix, including “Ninjago: Dragons Rising” and “Carmen Sandiego.” With “Sonic Prime,” they also have experience with video game adaptations. “Fireman Sam” is also credited to the studio.

When Will “Minecraft” Come to Netflix?
It seems too early for a specific release date. The announcement video only mentions that it is “coming soon.” The “Minecraft” movie was avoided in terms of timing. Whether this was intentional or the series simply isn’t finished yet remains unclear. Synergy effects would have been conceivable. At the same time, fans won’t be overwhelmed by too much “Minecraft” in a short period.
Meanwhile, the movie is raking in the cash. It has been in German theaters since April 3 and has already grossed more than half a billion U.S. dollars. Fans shouldn’t miss it. Here’s the trailer:
