What initially sounded like an absurd idea became a box office hit: The live-action adaptation of the video game classic “Minecraft” surprised in 2025 with massive earnings. It’s now confirmed that there will be a sequel—and it’s coming sooner than many expected.
Huge Success for the First “Minecraft” Movie
Video game adaptations had a tough time in theaters for a long while—many flopped in the early days at the box office. However, the genre has since found its footing and now regularly achieves success. This has reached a point where experts have started to see game adaptations as the successors to comic book movies. When director Jared Hess, known for “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre,” took on the long-planned “Minecraft” adaptation in 2023, the prospects for success were better than ever.
The endeavor paid off: The film, which premiered in spring 2025 with Jack Black starring as Steve, became a surprise hit. The adventure thrilled both fans and critics alike, grossing around $1 billion worldwide.
The “Minecraft” movie is currently available on WOW.

Sequel Officially Confirmed
Given this success, a sequel was only a matter of time. It’s now official: Warner Bros. has announced the second installment, set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. On the official X account of the first film, a teaser image was released showing two pixelated pickaxes with the words: “Under construction. See you in theaters on July 23, 2027.”
Nothing is known about the plot yet. However, Hollywood insiders had long anticipated that the studio would continue the success story.
Jared Hess Back in the Director’s Chair
As reported by the industry magazine “Variety,” Jared Hess will once again direct and co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta. Jason Momoa, who played the flamboyant Garrett Garrison in a pink leather jacket in the first film, will remain involved with the project—though for now, only as a producer. Whether he will also appear on screen is still unclear.
Fans can look forward to a return to the Minecraft world in theaters—and to see if the sequel can match the success of the first film.
