There are many films with real or imagined animal protagonists. But rarely has a Hollywood film featured such a creature at its center: an orca. The killer whale Keiko “played” the titular animal in “Free Willy” and two sequels. It has now been announced that the series is getting a reboot.
New “Free Willy” Film Planned
This was reported by the U.S. trade magazine “Variety.” It reveals that the once-popular family franchise is set to receive a new interpretation in the form of a film. Several prominent names are already involved behind the scenes. Leading the charge are Anthony and Joe Russo, who will serve as executive producers alongside others.
The Russos are well-known to many moviegoers today, as they directed “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” some of the most successful films of all time. Additionally, Lauren Shuler Donner is on board as a producer. Donner has been part of the brand since the first “Free Willy” film in 1993.

Screenwriters Found
It is further reported that Mary-Margaret Kunze and Jade Halley Bartlett have been signed on as screenwriters for the project, both of whom previously collaborated on “Miller’s Girl.”
There are no specific details about the plot. However, it is expected that the story will roughly follow the original and tell of a teenager who befriends an orca in captivity.
Will There Be a Real Orca Again?
At this point, it has not been communicated whether the new “Free Willy” project will be an animated or live-action film. In the latter case, it is assumed that, for animal welfare reasons, a real orca in captivity will not be used, especially since a campaign to free Keiko was launched during the original film.
