There are many series that have etched themselves deeply into the collective memory of fans over decades. Memorable characters and unforgettable stories are typically developed by creators over several seasons. But sometimes, just one season is enough. That’s the case with “Firefly.” But now, fans of the title can rejoice.
More “Firefly” in the Works
Only one season of “Firefly” was released in 2002. Yet it was enough to garner a loyal fan base that remains dedicated to the series to this day. These fans also made the late continuation of the space adventures of Mal Reynolds and crew possible in the form of the 2005 film “Serenity.” Since then, however, things have been quiet.
Until now. As reported by the well-known industry publication “Deadline,” a new “Firefly” project is in early development. Lead actor Nathan Fillion reportedly revealed this at Awesome Con. It is an animated series, with the original stars returning as voice actors. Besides Fillion, this includes Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau.

“Firefly” Project Without Joss Whedon
Fillion will also serve as a producer. Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters, who have experience with Marvel and DC series (“Agent Carter,” “Arrow”), are on board as showrunners and writers, and have already penned a first script for the new “Firefly” series.
Joss Whedon, the creator of the original, will not be involved this time. According to Fillion, he has given the project his blessing. Whedon, who also directed two “Avengers” films, has kept a low profile in recent years following serious allegations of difficult behavior.
First Concept Image Released
The new “Firefly” series is set to take place between the original series and the film. This aims to expand the universe while maintaining continuity. A first concept image has already been released:
“Firefly” was canceled after the first season due to initially weak ratings, but it gained many fans through DVD releases. It is still considered a cult classic and is often referenced, such as multiple times in “The Big Bang Theory.”
