The 1980s produced many films and series that still enjoy cult status and have many fans today. In the crime and police genre, “Miami Vice” stands out in particular. Now, the series is set to receive a new film adaptation.
New “Miami Vice” Film by “F1” Creator Coming
This is reported by the well-informed U.S. industry magazine “Variety.” The traditional studio Universal is responsible and has hired Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski is known for directing the billion-dollar hit “Top Gun: Maverick” with Tom Cruise and scored another success this year with “F1” starring Brad Pitt.
Who will step into the iconic roles of Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs is currently unknown. The search for the right stars is already underway. Furthermore, the first take is expected to happen in 2026.

Release Date for New “Miami Vice” Film Announced
Although filming has not yet begun, Universal has already set a U.S. release date. As it stands, “Miami Vice” is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2027. However, it’s unlikely to remain unchanged, as release schedules often shift.
Similar to the original series, the new project aims to explore “the glamour and corruption of 1980s Miami.” The inspiration will come from the pilot episode and the first season of the original.
The Original Is Still Worth Watching
In the original “Miami Vice” series, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas starred as Crockett and Tubbs. The series ran from 1984 to 1990 for a total of five seasons and was already adapted into a film in 2006 by Michael Mann (“Heat”), a driving force behind the series, with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx–though with weak results. Those who want to watch the original can currently do so on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video, where the first season is available for purchase.
The series is nothing short of groundbreaking and is considered by TECHBOOK as one of the eleven police series that have forever changed the genre. The aesthetics, reminiscent of early music videos, and the brightly colored costumes proved influential for the pop culture of the time. This even led to the fashion shown in the series becoming an international trend, including in Germany.
