Amazon is expanding its streaming offerings with a new Fire TV Stick HD. However, even before its official launch, the device sparked discussions. The reason lies in the change of operating systems. Instead of Fire OS, Vega OS is now being used. This significantly alters key functions. For many, the update feels less like progress and more like a significant reduction in previous capabilities.
One of the biggest changes affects what’s known as “sideloading.” This involves manually installing apps from external sources. Under Fire OS, it was possible to use programs outside the official store. This freedom is eliminated with the new system. According to several media reports, this feature is completely removed. This especially limits users who want to customize their device.
Smaller App Selection and Technical Limitations
The selection of apps under Vega OS is also smaller than before. While important streaming services remain available, the overall choice is limited. Additionally, some applications show weaknesses. According to “AFTVNews,” Plex’s usability is restricted and familiar functions are missing. Playback also has limitations. Only certain video formats are supported, and the quality is limited.

New System Hardly Mentioned
It’s noticeable that Amazon does not clearly communicate the new operating system. Neither in the official announcement nor on the product page is Vega OS prominently highlighted. Instead, the company emphasizes other aspects. The new Fire TV Stick HD is said to be about 30 percent more compact and approximately 30 percent faster than the previous model.
Other innovations are present but less noticeable. The stick still supports only Full HD resolution but now additionally offers HDR10 and HDR10+. There’s also an upgrade in wireless standards: Bluetooth 5.3 instead of 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6 instead of dual-band Wi-Fi. The price remains unchanged. The new Fire TV Stick HD still costs 44.99 euros.

Predecessor Remains an Alternative for Now
Users should weigh whether the new Fire TV Stick HD meets their needs or if an older model is the better choice. The previous model with Fire OS is still available and offers more freedom in use. However, Amazon apparently plans to eventually replace the older version with the new generation, which could limit choices in the future.
