PayPal is one of the most popular payment methods in Germany. A full nine out of ten online shoppers use the service regularly, with over 33 million active accounts in total. Many use PayPal not only for one-time payments but also to manage subscriptions.

PayPal offers several features that can help organize recurring payments clearly. For example, existing PayPal balances can be automatically used first for subscriptions before amounts are deducted from a bank account or credit card. Additionally, payment data can be changed centrally, which is much faster than adjusting it with each individual provider. Furthermore, subscriptions, direct debits, and past payments can be viewed in one place.

Find and Cancel Subscriptions in the App

Here’s how to check your subscriptions on your smartphone:

  1. Open the PayPal app.
  2. Tap the profile icon at the top right.
  3. Select “Subscriptions.”

Here you can see all active subscriptions–from streaming services like Spotify or Disney+ to tickets like the Deutschlandticket.

To end a subscription, select the respective provider and click “Unlink.” In most cases, the subscription will continue until the end of the current billing period. For providers with minimum terms, you will receive an email to add a new payment method.

Update Payment Method or Add New Subscriptions

If desired, users can also adjust their payment method. Here’s how:

  1. Tap “Update” in the subscription menu.
  2. Mark all subscriptions that should receive a new account or card.
  3. Select or add the desired payment method.
  4. Set the slider to use the balance first.
  5. Click “Update.”

New subscriptions are added through the provider, not via the PayPal app. After adding, the service automatically appears in the subscription list. Supported services include Netflix, Sky, Urban Sports Club, Dropbox, or Deezer.

Management on the Computer

Subscription management with PayPal can also be done quickly and clearly on the desktop. Through the web interface, you have access to all ongoing debits and can adjust or end them as needed.

  1. Log in at paypal.com.
  2. Open settings.
  3. Select “Payments” → “Automatic Payments.”

All active debit agreements are clearly displayed there. You can click on individual providers to view details or directly cancel the link if needed. Changes usually take effect immediately, so no further debits occur via PayPal.

Subscriptions or Debits Missing in the App

If a subscription does not appear in the app, you can find it under the “Wallet” section and then under “Automatic Payments.” There, select the respective provider and remove PayPal as the stored payment method. PayPal will send a confirmation email in any case. If there is a minimum term, the agreed fees will still apply.

It’s worth regularly reviewing your subscriptions and canceling services you no longer need. This way, you can keep better track of your expenses in the long run.
