A broken washing machine, a damaged smartphone, or a suddenly failed laptop can quickly lead to high costs. For those who don’t want to pay for larger purchases in full right away, Amazon has long offered the option to pay for certain purchases in monthly installments. Now, another option is being added. PayPal’s installment payment will soon be available on Amazon in Germany and Austria. However, it’s worth taking a close look at the terms and costs before using it.
Introduction doesn’t start simultaneously for everyone
The new payment option will be available on both amazon.de and the Amazon app. However, Amazon and PayPal have not yet specified an exact launch date. What is certain is that the introduction will begin gradually from August 2026. As a result, not all eligible users may receive the feature at the same time. Additionally, a German or Austrian PayPal account is required to use it.
Whether a purchase can actually be financed through PayPal installments is only determined during the payment process. PayPal checks creditworthiness and then decides on the financing offered. If approved, purchases between 30 and 10,000 euros can be financed. In addition to the already known terms of three, six, twelve, and 24 months, Amazon will also offer financing options of 36 and 48 months.
Term, rate, and costs are displayed directly
The amount of the monthly payment depends on the chosen term. The respective monthly rate, along with the interest rate and the total amount to be repaid, is displayed during the ordering process.
After the purchase, users can manage their installment plan in their PayPal account. The monthly amounts are automatically deducted from the linked bank account or a debit card. To ensure sufficient funds are available for the deduction, PayPal sends reminders via email and SMS before each payment.

Financing can become significantly more expensive
The actual costs depend on the specific offer. According to the provider, financing with 0 percent interest is possible for individual products. However, a standard effective annual interest rate of 11.49 percent is often charged.
According to the company, customers financing 1,000 euros over twelve months will repay a total of 1,059.94 euros. While choosing a longer term usually results in lower monthly rates, it often increases the total cost of financing.

Multiple installment purchases can become a burden
It can be particularly critical when multiple purchases are financed simultaneously. Individual monthly rates often seem manageable but can add up to a significant financial burden.
If additional expenses arise or available income decreases, the monthly payments continue. Therefore, prospective buyers should not only check the rate amount before committing but also consider the total costs, repayment duration, and their financial leeway.
At least, according to the company, PayPal allows additional payments and the full early repayment of an installment purchase without incurring further costs.
