The Wahl-O-Mat for the state election in Saxony-Anhalt is online. This free service is designed to help voters compare party positions and make informed voting decisions.

38 Theses Lead to the Right Party

Just in time for the state election on September 6, the Wahl-O-Mat went online. Developed by the Federal Center and the State Center for Political Education, this online tool has been one of the most used digital information resources before elections for years. It aims to transparently present political differences between parties and encourage users to further explore the election programs.

To do this, users answer 38 theses on state political topics. The system then compares their answers with the positions of the participating parties and calculates the degree of agreement. Additionally, users can give more weight to particularly important topics. For each thesis, the parties’ justifications are displayed, ensuring the results remain understandable.

These Topics Are Central

The questions cover numerous policy areas, including economy, education, migration, family, and finance. Specifically, they address issues such as wind power, speed limits of 30 km/h in towns, Sunday store openings, the establishment of defense companies, or extended elementary school duration.

According to the Federal Center for Political Education, personal data is not stored. Only the number of participants is recorded. The 38 theses were developed by a youth editorial team from Saxony-Anhalt together with experts from politics and science. They were based on the parties’ election programs and state-politically relevant topics.

Alternatives Use Different Methods

In addition to the Wahl-O-Mat, there are other digital decision aids. The Sozial-O-Mat from Diakonie Mitteldeutschland focuses on social policy issues and compares party positions based on 20 theses.

Another alternative is the Party-Check from the University of Potsdam. This tool uses 18 questions and evaluates the agreement with parties as a percentage. Unlike the Wahl-O-Mat, the party positions do not come from the parties themselves but from a survey of more than 50 political scientists.
