With a new security update, Microsoft addresses an unusually high number of vulnerabilities. Those who regularly postpone updates should be particularly attentive this time. The current Patch Tuesday closes nearly 1,000 security gaps in Microsoft products. Some of these are classified by Microsoft as particularly critical–attackers are already exploiting two of the vulnerabilities, according to the company.
Microsoft Closes Nearly 1,000 Security Vulnerabilities
On each Patch Tuesday, Microsoft bundles its security updates and makes them available to users. However, the September package is significantly more extensive than usual. According to the Zero Day Initiative, 972 vulnerabilities in Microsoft products are being addressed. When considering errors in software from other manufacturers, the number rises to 997 fixed security gaps.
Microsoft rates 114 of the newly closed vulnerabilities as particularly dangerous. This package is among the largest security updates in recent times.
Two Vulnerabilities Already Being Exploited
Particularly critical are two security vulnerabilities in Windows that, according to Microsoft, are already being exploited in attacks. One of them affects the update function of certain versions of Windows 11. The other vulnerability is found in Windows 10 and some server editions of the operating system.
However, a direct attack over the Internet is not possible, according to Microsoft. Initially, a malicious program must already be present on the affected computer. Once that is achieved, attackers can then gain almost complete control over the computer.
This Update for Windows 11 Users
For Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, Microsoft provides the Update KB5124008. In addition to security fixes, the update addresses other system errors.

Additional Features Added
Additionally, the package includes features from an optional update that was already released in August. Users can now place the taskbar not only at the bottom of the screen but also at the top or sides of the display.
Moreover, the size of the Start menu can be adjusted. Individual sections can be hidden. Suggestions from the Internet and the Microsoft Store can also be removed from Windows search.
Microsoft is rolling out the new features gradually. Therefore, not all devices will receive the changes at the same time.
How to Check the Update
Windows usually downloads and installs security updates automatically. Those who want to check if the current update is already available can find the option in Windows settings under “Windows Update.”
