Users often notice a typo only after a photo or video has already been published as a WhatsApp status. Previously, anyone wanting to correct the error had to delete the entire status and then republish it. This creates additional effort. Contacts might see the same content again. This exact problem could be solved by WhatsApp in the future with a new feature.

Two Ways to Edit

The planned update will allow users to directly change the caption of an already published status. As reported by the portal specializing in WhatsApp updates, “WABetaInfo,” the messenger is working on two access methods for the feature.

First, an additional editing option will appear in the menu of your status updates overview. Alternatively, WhatsApp will display a small pencil icon next to the text when opening your status. Both methods lead to the editing view, where users can correct errors or adjust wording. After saving, WhatsApp directly applies the changes to the existing status.

Edits Only Within 15 Minutes

However, there is only a limited time window for editing. The feature will only be usable within the first 15 minutes after publication. After that, the editing option disappears.

Unlike edited chat messages, WhatsApp does not mark the changed caption as edited. Contacts who have already viewed the status will not receive a notification of the change. If they open the status again, they will automatically see the updated version of the text.

Feature Currently Being Tested

WABetaInfo discovered the new feature in the WhatsApp beta for Android with version number 2.26.30.1. Currently, only some users of the beta version can access the feature.

The rollout is happening gradually. Therefore, the update does not automatically appear for all testers even after installing the appropriate version. Reports suggest that some users outside the beta program have even gained access.

Launch Date Unknown

It is currently unclear when the feature will be available to all users. So far, there is no information on when the editing of status captions will be widely integrated into the regular WhatsApp version.

What is certain so far is that WhatsApp is already testing the new capability and is gradually expanding its release. Whether and when it will be available worldwide is still unknown.
