According to a report by “TechCrunch,” on August 3, 2026, there were increasing indications on social networks of such lockouts. Affected users could no longer access their usual chat overview.
Instead, a message from WhatsApp appeared. It explained that account activities and device information were being checked for possible violations of the terms of use.
According to the message, the result of such a review is usually available within 24 hours. However, access to the messenger remained blocked until the review was completed.

The reported cases apparently did not only involve suspicious or already known accounts. This is suggested by posts from affected users on the Platform X. One person publicly reached out to Meta and WhatsApp, asking for the reason behind the review of their account. Another user reported an account being deactivated without warning.
According to her own account, she used only the official WhatsApp app. She also stated that she relied on the messenger for work.
Cause of the Reviews Remains Unclear
It is still unclear what triggered the lockouts. According to the report, WhatsApp does not provide a specific reason for the reviews and the associated temporary deactivation of accounts. There is also no information on whether certain countries or regions were particularly affected. The total number of accounts possibly mistakenly locked is also unknown.
Meta has since admitted that errors can occur in detecting abuse. The company stated that WhatsApp is continuously working to identify suspicious activities and block the corresponding accounts.
