Google is expanding Android with a new security feature for password managers. In the future, users will be able to transfer passwords and passkeys more easily between different services. The update is distributed via Play System Services and is available for current Android smartphones and tablets that receive the necessary Play updates.
Secure Data Transfer Between Password Managers
With version 26.21 of the Play Services, Google introduces support for the so-called Credential Exchange Standard. The update distribution has been ongoing since June 1, 2026.
This makes it possible to import and export passwords and passkeys between different password managers. The transfer is end-to-end encrypted. According to Google, this solution offers more security than the commonly used methods involving CSV or JSON files.

Android Manages the Transfer of Access Data
The new feature is designed to simplify switching from one password manager to another. Users no longer need to temporarily store or manually transfer their access data.

Instead, Android handles the data transfer directly via the Credential Exchange Protocol, also known as CXP. This reduces the risk of sensitive information being processed unprotected during a switch.
Support by Multiple Password Managers
The Credential Exchange Standard was introduced in 2024 by the independent IT security organization FIDO Alliance. Several well-known password managers already support the standard, including Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane. Apple’s password manager also relies on CXP.
This allows users to transfer passwords and passkeys not only between different applications but also across different ecosystems.
Google is activating the new feature as part of the current Android feature drop. The rollout is happening gradually on compatible Android devices. In the coming days and weeks, the feature will become available to users whose devices receive the required Play updates.
