Google plans to undertake an unusual project in the U.S. The tech giant has submitted an application to the relevant authorities to release up to 32 million mosquitoes in California and Florida over two years. The project, called “Debug,” aims to reduce the number of mosquito species that can transmit diseases such as dengue fever, Zika, chikungunya, or the West Nile virus.
Between Hope and Control
For Google’s project, only male mosquitoes will be used, as reported by “Smithsonian Magazine.” These insects do not bite. Additionally, they carry the naturally occurring bacterium Wolbachia. When the released males encounter wild female mosquitoes and mate with them, no viable offspring are produced. This is intended to gradually reduce the population of the affected mosquito species.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently reviewing the application. The plan is to release up to 16 million mosquitoes per year in the two states. Before the agency makes a decision, citizens and experts can express their opinions on the project in a public process.

Experiences from Other Countries
The method is not being used for the first time. Several countries have already tested similar programs. In Singapore, for example, the results were particularly positive. Authorities there reported significantly smaller mosquito populations and a decrease in dengue infections in the affected regions.

Despite these experiences, the project is being discussed controversially. Critics see potential risks to local ecosystems and demand a careful examination of possible long-term effects. Proponents argue, on the other hand, that the method specifically targets disease-transmitting mosquitoes and could reduce the use of insecticides.
Why Google is Behind the Project
At first glance, it seems unusual for an internet company to be involved with mosquitoes. However, the “Debug” project originates from the innovation division of Alphabet’s research activities. Scientists there work on so-called “moonshot” projects, which are technological approaches intended to provide solutions to major societal challenges.
For Alphabet, the mosquito project is part of a broader strategy. The company invests not only in its core business but also in areas such as health, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. The mosquito initiative is part of this long-term orientation.
