Many messenger users know the problem: When you’re on the go, you often have only one hand free for a quick message. At the same time, a voice message isn’t always the best choice in every situation. Apparently, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will convert spoken words directly into a regular text message in a chat.
According to “WABetaInfo,” the dictation feature is supposed to be integrated directly into the messenger. Upon first use, the messenger briefly explains the function. Users then select a language and download the appropriate language pack to their smartphone. Once installed, dictation should be possible even without an active internet connection.
Spoken Messages Should Convert Directly to Text
After setup, the feature can be activated directly within a chat. During recording, WhatsApp displays the message “Listening …”. Users then speak their message, which the messenger is supposed to automatically convert into text. If they change their mind, they can cancel the process at any time. WhatsApp is expected to use the same language pack already employed for the text display of voice messages.
After processing, the recipient receives a regular text message. The original voice is not transmitted, and there is no indication that the message was created using the dictation feature. It is intended for use in private chats, group chats, and channels.
Feature Not Yet Activated
The new feature was discovered in the Android beta of WhatsApp with version number 2.26.37.8. Although the feature is reportedly included in this test version, even participants in the beta program cannot use it yet.

As reported by “WABetaInfo,” there is also no information on a possible release for iOS. A date for the general release on Android is also not yet known. It remains unclear whether WhatsApp will ultimately complete the development of the feature or abandon the project.
