Artificial intelligence is making its way into online dating. However, a recent study shows that while most singles accept AI as a tool, they draw clear lines when it comes to automatically generated messages.
AI helps with writing–feelings should still be genuine
ChatGPT and other AI chatbots are now regularly used by many people–including in online dating. This is shown by a study from the dating platform Parship among more than 1,000 singles. According to the study, nearly half have already had experiences with AI, and about one-third use such tools regularly. Usage is particularly common among 18- to 29-year-olds, while it significantly decreases with age.
Many singles are generally open to technical support when getting to know someone. Fifty-seven percent find it acceptable to be inspired by AI for messages. However, the condition is that the actual message is then formulated by themselves. AI is thus seen more as a creative writing aid rather than a replacement for personal communication.

Automatically generated messages are poorly received
If AI goes beyond this role, openness quickly ends. According to the study, 64 percent of respondents would break off contact if they discovered that their counterpart was sending fully AI-generated messages. Women react somewhat more critically than men, and older singles, in particular, place great value on authentic communication.
Only about one in five could imagine letting AI write the entire conversation. This willingness decreases further with age. For Parship psychologist Lisa Fischbach, this is not surprising: Dating is about getting to know a person as authentically as possible. Perfectly formulated messages might impress, but trust usually arises through personal and individual expression.

Authenticity remains crucial in profiles too
Singles are similarly cautious when designing their dating profiles. Only 34 percent use AI for support. Younger users, in particular, turn to chatbots, while older generations prefer to write their profile texts entirely themselves.
Also interesting is the respondents’ assessment of the recognizability of AI content. Every second single is convinced they can recognize automatically generated texts. This confidence is particularly pronounced among 40- to 49-year-olds. The study’s results thus point to a clear trend: AI is increasingly accepted as a tool in online dating–but actual communication and the first impression should remain as human as possible.
