Turn on the TV, switch to KiKA, and the children’s program is already running. This familiar routine for many families is set to disappear soon. By the end of 2032, the children’s channel from ARD and ZDF plans to move entirely online. After that, KiKA will no longer be available via traditional television. An internet connection will be required to access it.
KiKA Disappears from Traditional Television
In the future, KiKA will no longer be available via cable, satellite, or antenna. This is according to a statement from the MDR Broadcasting Council. The basis for this transition is the reform state treaty effective since December 2025. It continues to secure KiKA as a joint offering from ARD and ZDF, but also marks the end of traditional TV broadcasting.
Those who still want to watch KiKA on a large screen can use a smart TV, for example. These televisions can connect to the internet. A suitable KiKA application is already available for these devices.
Through the app, families can start individual episodes at any time. If a video is paused, it can be resumed later at the same point. The current TV program can also be accessed there. However, it is not yet confirmed whether this livestream will remain available after the end of TV broadcasting.

Technical Transition Already Underway
Preparations for the move to the internet have already begun. After the treaty came into effect, the technical overhaul started in early 2026. KiKA is relying on “Streaming OS,” the joint software platform of ARD and ZDF. It is already being used in the new TV app.

By the end of 2027, the website and other apps are also expected to transition to the platform. This is the deadline for the technical overhaul. The actual farewell to TV broadcasting will occur by the end of 2032 at the latest.
Many Children Already Use KiKA Online
The importance of digital offerings is already evident from figures provided by the MDR Broadcasting Council. According to them, by 2025, seven out of ten children in Germany were already using KiKA’s online offerings.
Even after further expansion, the children’s channel is intended to remain a safe space for young viewers–guaranteed by age-appropriate content and a complete absence of advertising.
