Programming is considered one of the great strengths of modern AI systems. Today, even laypeople can create their own applications by describing to a chatbot what they want. The term “vibe-coding” has been established for this type of programming. It means that you only roughly explain your idea to the AI, and it generates the code itself.

Until now, one prerequisite was necessary: You had to explain to the AI via voice or text input what it should develop. U.S. software developer Caleb Leak has simplified this principle even further. He went so far that even this is no longer necessary. His dog Momo has thus become probably the first animal game developer.

Dog types, AI interprets

As the Californian reports in his blog, the toy poodle mix has “developed” several video games using the AI tool Claude Code. The dog’s task was remarkably simple: Momo randomly walked over a Bluetooth keyboard. The result was pure gibberish.

To ensure the AI still understood these random inputs as meaningful instructions, Leak prepared the system specifically. He informed Claude Code that the upcoming inputs were from an eccentric game designer who communicated only in cryptic riddles. Behind these riddles, however, were brilliant game ideas. The AI accepted this premise and creatively interpreted the jumbled sequences of characters.

From letters to a game concept

For one project, Momo generated the string “wsaqq4e3wd232’21sazqa”. Claude Code derived a complete game concept from it. The letters “wsa” were interpreted by the AI as a reference to the “WASD” key control commonly used in computer games for movement. From this, it concluded a game with free movement possibilities.

In the sequence “saz,” Claude Code recognized a Turkish musical instrument of the same name. The letters “qa” were associated by the AI with the word quasar, the active cores of distant galaxies, as well as with the term amplitude. From these interpretations, the concept “Quasar Saz” emerged. In it, a cheerful alien named Zara, trapped in a sound dimension, fights enemies with a cosmic saz and collects musical notes in four different worlds.

AI creates prototype and expands functions

Claude Code developed a prototype of the game based on these self-conceived work instructions. Momo was then allowed to press the keyboard again. With a 23 and an “S,” she triggered further adjustments. The AI then increased the difficulty level between the second and third attack waves and added a super ability. This allows players to eliminate all enemies on the screen simultaneously.

In a third run, Claude Code added bosses, alternative weapon systems, hidden collectibles, and an experience point system reminiscent of role-playing games. Caleb Leak offers the game in its original version as well as in an optimized variant on his website for download. He admits that the gap between experimental projects like this and professional programming has significantly narrowed over the past year and that this trend is rapidly continuing.
