Video game adaptations are booming and increasingly becoming reliable box office hits, as adaptations like “Super Mario Bros.” or the “Sonic” trilogy impressively demonstrate. Streaming services also want a significant piece of this pie, with Netflix leading the charge.
Formats like “Castlevania” or “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” based on gaming templates already exist, and more major projects are currently in the works–such as a series on the most successful game of all time. Now, Netflix has officially confirmed an “Assassin’s Creed” series, marking the next big game franchise to be adapted.
Netflix Series on “Assassin’s Creed” Long Planned
This is according to a report from the U.S. industry magazine “Variety.” According to the report, the “Assassin’s Creed” series has been in planning at Netflix for five years, and the project has undergone several personnel changes in the meantime.
Currently, Roberto Patino and David Wiener, two highly capable individuals, are set as series creators, showrunners, and executive producers–forming a creative leadership duo. Patino has previously co-produced “Sons of Anarchy” and “Westworld,” while Wiener has credits including “Fear the Walking Dead” and the game adaptation “Halo.”
The producers have ample experience with high-profile projects. Additionally, the French game studio Ubisoft, home of the “Assassin’s Creed” series, provides further executive producers, including Gérard Guillemot, a founding member of Ubisoft.
What It’s About
There are not many details available yet, such as the cast. However, there is a preliminary plot summary. The story centers on two factions waging a secret war in the shadows. One side aims to determine humanity’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights for free will. The fate of humanity is decided in battles across various significant moments in history. Similar to the games, time travel and visiting different eras, countries, and cultures will play a central role.

It’s currently too early for a release date for “Assassin’s Creed” on Netflix. Meanwhile, Netflix and Ubisoft have a deal under which “Rabbids Invasion” and “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix” have already been released. A series titled “Splinter Cell: Deathwatch” is set to premiere at the end of 2025. All these titles are animated series, but “Assassin’s Creed” is set to be the first live-action series from the Netflix-Ubisoft deal.
Incidentally, there was a 2016 film adaptation of the game series, featuring a prominent cast including Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons. However, it received poor reviews at the time and quickly became a flop.
