Gaming is becoming increasingly expensive for many players. After numerous console manufacturers raised their hardware prices in recent months, Sony has now followed suit with its online service, PlayStation Plus. Initially affected is the lowest subscription tier, “Essential.” The changes were set to take effect on May 20, 2026.
In recent months, several companies have already adjusted their prices or announced corresponding increases. Rising production costs are putting pressure on the industry. Manufacturers continue to struggle with memory shortages and a challenging economic environment. Many companies are now passing these additional costs on to their customers. Sony had also raised the price of the PlayStation 5 multiple times.
New Prices for PS Plus Essential
As Sony announced via X, formerly Twitter, the fees for PlayStation Plus Essential have increased in some regions. However, the company has not yet specified which countries are affected. Sony released new prices in dollars and pounds, as well as in euros. This suggests that the increase also applies to Europe, including Germany.

The monthly Essential subscription now costs 9.99 euros, up from the previous 8.99 euros. The three-month subscription has also become more expensive, rising from 24.99 euros to 27.99 euros. The higher tiers, “Extra” and “Premium,” remain unchanged for now.
Existing Subscriptions Remain Unchanged for Now
Those who already have an active subscription apparently do not have to pay the higher prices for the time being. Sony states that existing memberships will not be adjusted initially. The new fees will apply only if users cancel or change their current subscription.
According to the current status, the annual subscription for PS Plus Essential is also exempt from the price increase. The more expensive memberships are not affected so far. Sony justifies the adjustments with the ongoing difficult market conditions.
Whether further price increases could follow remains uncertain. Competitor Microsoft faced significant criticism from players during a previous adjustment of the Game Pass. It is possible that Sony will implement any further changes gradually.
