Users of Samsung devices such as Galaxy smartphones and tablets will face a change: The automatic upload of images from the Samsung Gallery app to OneDrive cloud storage will be discontinued on September 30, 2026.
This information comes from a recently published support document by Microsoft. For users, this means not only that uploading photos to the Redmond-based company’s cloud storage will soon no longer work. It also means that the Samsung Gallery app will no longer be able to easily display files stored in OneDrive.
Images still on Microsoft servers
According to Microsoft, users do not need to fear data loss. The photos already uploaded will remain in the OneDrive account and will still be accessible via the OneDrive app or the desktop version. Only direct access through the Samsung app will be eliminated. Samsung users can continue to upload their images if they use the OneDrive app and configure the automatic media upload accordingly.
Uncertainty about Samsung’s future plans
Existing customers can use the service until the specified date. However, new connections between Samsung Gallery and Microsoft OneDrive are no longer possible. Why Microsoft and Samsung made this decision is unclear. There is speculation that Samsung may be working on its own cloud solution, which might be introduced in October after the deadline of September 30. An official confirmation is still pending.
Currently, both Microsoft and Samsung are still promoting the connection between the Gallery app and OneDrive on their websites. However, it is foreseeable that this information will be removed soon.
