Sony has confirmed that a new PlayStation is in development, but remains tight-lipped about specific details. However, more hints about possible features and the performance of the upcoming console are circulating. It already seems clear that rising hardware prices could also play a role with the PS6.
At the same time, current reports suggest that Sony plans to counteract with certain features. This includes backward compatibility with PlayStation 5 games. Additionally, an improved streaming technology is expected to be integrated, which could partially replace traditional game purchases.
Server Technology and Storage in Focus
According to a report from the website “mp1st,” Sony has specifically invested in its server infrastructure over the past three years to significantly increase the speed of its data centers. For streaming games on the PS6, particularly fast SSDs of the PCIe Gen5 NVMe type are to be used. This technology could also be directly built into the console. Compared to the currently used PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSDs, this would double the operating speed. According to insiders, the console offers 1 terabyte of storage. At the same time, games are expected to require less storage space due to an AI-supported texture compression process.

Another focus is apparently on artificial intelligence. Sony is currently expanding its teams in this area, which could also be reflected in the new console. The company already uses its own upscaling technology, PSSR. This is expected to be further improved for the PS6 and play an important role in image optimization. Additionally, there are hints of a first game project. It involves a horror shooter in third-person perspective, based on the Unreal Engine 5. The game is apparently being developed in collaboration with a partner studio. It is not expected to be a traditional shooter.
Possible Release and New Device Form
Insiders currently believe that the PlayStation 6 will be released in 2027. At the same time, rumors are circulating about a possible new concept. Accordingly, Sony might take inspiration from the Nintendo Switch principle and develop a hybrid console. This could be used both stationary and mobile. Microsoft is also rumored to be working on a new console. This is also expected to be released in 2027 and is currently being developed under the name Project Helix.
