Spotify recently announced a significant price increase, effective August 14, for new customers. The streaming service has raised its subscription options by up to 22 percent. Starting in November, the new prices will also apply to existing customers. However, there’s a trick for customers to keep their subscription at the old rate—or even cheaper.

New Customers Face Higher Costs

On average, the costs for Spotify’s monthly subscription options have increased by one-fifth:

  • Individual: previously 10.99 euros; now 11.99 euros (18 percent more)
  • Student: previously 5.99 euros; now 6.99 euros (20 percent more)
  • Duo: previously 14.99 euros; now 17.99 euros (20 percent more)
  • Family: previously 17.99 euros, now 21.99 euros (22 percent more)

These prices have been in effect for new customers since mid-August, as reported by TECHBOOK. Existing customers are receiving emails notifying them of the changes. For ongoing subscriptions, the higher costs will take effect on November 15 with the corresponding billing. Those who do not agree to the new terms will be automatically downgraded by Spotify to the free subscription.

Despite the new pricing structure, the streaming service is currently offering new customers three free subscription months in the Individual and Student options. Existing customers can also switch to a new Basic version of the subscription. This retains the old prices but eliminates the monthly playback time for audiobooks included in the Premium version. Another restriction, according to Spotify support: “If you cancel your Basic subscription, you cannot re-subscribe.”

Save Big with Spotify Gift Cards

In addition to monthly billing, Spotify also offers gift cards that provide access to the streaming service for one month to 12 months. All that’s required is a Spotify account. The catch: While the company has adjusted subscription amounts for monthly-paying customers, the gift cards remain at the old prices:

  • 1 month: 11 euros
  • 3 months: 33 euros
  • 6 months: 66 euros
  • 12 months: 110 euros

Even before the price increase, customers could save 17 percent with the 12-month option, as they effectively paid for 10 months but received 12 months. After the adjustment of monthly amounts, savings can now be made with every gift card. Instead of 12.99 euros per month, Premium Individual is still available for 11 euros—a savings of nearly 15 percent.

Premium Individual Up to 30 Percent Cheaper

The difference is particularly striking with the 12-month Spotify Premium gift card. New customers pay 110 euros for a year instead of 155.88 euros—more than 45 euros or nearly 29 percent savings.

But are the cards still valid after the price increase? The Spotify support states: “[Y]ou can still redeem your gift card even if you purchased it at a lower price.” The answer is clear: yes!

Additionally, the gift cards are valid for 36 months. So if you buy four cards at 110 euros each now, you can enjoy Spotify Premium for the next four years for 440 euros instead of 623.52 euros.
