The nominations for the 2022 Emmy Awards are in. Streaming providers are once again well-represented, especially Netflix. However, the major competitor Disney+ is far behind.
The counterpart to the Oscars, which are awarded for films, are the Emmy Awards for series. The nominees for the prestigious award have now been announced. A trend has been noticeable for several years: streaming productions are increasingly prominent. A few years ago, it was a hotly debated rarity for series from streaming providers to be nominated, but now they are in the majority. The nominations reflect the actual viewing habits. Streaming services are producing more series. Netflix and others are again well-represented at the 2022 Emmy Awards. Only Disney+ has far fewer nominations than expected. These Series Lead the Pack at the 2022 Emmy Awards
The most promising series at this year’s Emmys are HBO’s “Succession” and the surprising Netflix hit “Squid Game.” The HBO series about a media mogul and his family intrigues garnered 25 nominations, while “Squid Game” received 14 nominations. The South Korean drama about social inequality is considered the most likely candidate for one of the major awards. Ahead in the number of nominations is HBO’s drama “Euphoria,” with Zendaya also nominated in the lead role. However, Apple TV+’s “Severance” surprisingly secured 14 nominations.
Last year, Netflix claimed the title of best drama series with the fourth season of “The Crown.” The series is not among this year’s nominees, as no new season was released. At the 2022 Emmy Awards, Netflix aims to defend the title with “Squid Game,” “Ozark,” or the fourth season of the dark fantasy hit “Stranger Things.”
In the comedy series category, “Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso” are the big favorites. In the limited series category, HBO’s “The White Lotus” is the most promising candidate. Competition comes mainly from Netflix and Hulu with series like “Inventing Anna” and “Dopesick.”
Which Actors Have the Best Chances?
There are several strong contenders for the acting awards in the main categories. A clear frontrunner has yet to emerge, but Zendaya could once again secure the title of best lead actress in a drama series for her role in “Euphoria.” In 2020, she became the youngest actress ever to win this award for the same role in an earlier season.
Nominees from “Squid Game,” especially lead actor Lee Jung-jae, are also seen as having good chances. His main competitor is likely Brian Cox for his role in “Succession.” However, Oh Young-soo, born in 1944 and already a winner at this year’s Golden Globes, could also be a contender for best supporting actor.
In the comedy categories, Nicolas Hoult (“The Great”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) are strong candidates. Elle Fanning (“The Great”) is nominated for the first time and with good chances, but Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Issa Rae (“Insecure”) will not make it easy for her.
The limited series category is particularly exciting. With Colin Firth (“The Staircase”), Oscar Isaacs (“Scenes from a Marriage”), and Sebastian Stan (“Pam & Tommy”), there are several notable contenders. Among the women, the competition is just as fierce with Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”), Lily James (“Pam & Tommy”), and Toni Collette (“The Staircase”).
Interestingly, Barack Obama is also nominated in the “Best Narrator” category for “Our Great National Parks,” competing against voice legend David Attenborough.

Netflix vs. Disney+ – No Rivals at the 2022 Emmy Awards
While streaming leader Netflix secured numerous nominations with various productions, and Prime Video and others appear frequently, it is notable that a major name is missing in the main categories: Disney+.
This is partly because the streaming service has produced few original series that could appear at the 2022 Emmy Awards. Nominated formats like “Pam & Tommy” are purchased from the U.S. service Hulu and shown exclusively in Germany. The same applies to “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Dropout.” Most of Disney+’s “true” originals are aimed at a younger audience. The exceptions are “Star Wars” and Marvel, Disney’s two major brands. Last year, “WandaVision” at least received nominations, although the series largely went home empty-handed at the awards. The fact that none of the Disney+ series are nominated in the important categories this Emmy season is likely displeasing to the executives.
There were several potential candidates, including the Marvel series “Hawkeye” and “Moon Knight.” The biggest favorite at Disney+ was actually “Loki” with Tom Hiddleston. Although “What if…?” was considered in later nomination rounds, it is unlikely to change the overall picture significantly.

Even more prestigious is the “Drama” category. The most successful series in terms of Emmys is “Game of Thrones,” which won the award 57 times, including several for best drama series. Since the final season, the category has become much more competitive, including the 2022 Emmy Awards. Notably, Netflix is represented three times, surpassing perennial leader HBO (+ HBO Max). The latest season of “Stranger Things,” whose finale was released on Netflix in early July, is also nominated.
