Those using Disney+ in the premium tier do not receive the offered picture quality on every device. 4K content and HDR have been available only in a limited capacity for months. At least with HDR10, there is some progress: Disney is once again providing content with this picture format. However, not all users benefit from this. The available picture quality still depends on the TV or playback device used.
HDR10 Works Again on Some Devices
The reason for the restrictions is a patent dispute between Disney and the U.S. company InterDigital. As a result, Disney had to deactivate the previously used transmission technology in countries such as Germany. For HDR10, the streaming service now relies on a different technical method called VP9-2. However, not every device supports this solution.
This means HDR10 remains limited to certain TVs and streaming devices. Dolby Vision is still unavailable. Especially in dark scenes, HDR can help reveal more details in the picture.

These TVs and Streaming Devices Support HDR10
The specialist portal “FlatpanelsHD” reports that Disney is once again offering movies and series in HDR10 under certain conditions. According to the report, playback works on selected TVs from Philips, Sony, and TCL with Android TV or Google TV. Fire TV devices and certain models from Hisense and LG are also included.

The Danish portal “DIGITALT.TV” tested HDR playback. According to their findings, Disney+ could again display content with HDR on a Fire TV Stick 4K. The results were different on other devices. An Apple TV 4K of the third generation and an Nvidia Shield TV Pro showed only a picture without HDR in the same test, even though both devices generally support HDR. When Disney+ will support the technology on these devices again is currently unknown.
Premium Subscription Still Costs 15.99 Euros
The cost of the premium tier remains unchanged despite the restrictions. Disney+ continues to charge 15.99 euros per month or 159.90 euros per year in Germany. The Consumer Center of Lower Saxony recommends that users who do not receive the promised picture features demand a partial refund from Disney customer service.
Legally, the pressure on Disney is also increasing. According to “Heise,” consumer advocates issued a warning to the company on October 29, 2026. They demand either lower prices or refunds, as well as clear indications of the current restrictions. Disney is expected to provide a written commitment by November 20. If this does not happen, the Consumer Center plans to consider further legal action.
