What “Titane” Is About

Since childhood, Alexia has had a titanium plate in her head, which she received after a car accident. Highest Honor for “Titane”

What exactly is “Titane”? The work cannot be easily categorized, as there are too many thematic layers on which the narrative operates. The film is sexy, but also at times brutal and repulsive–due to its occasionally gruesome visuals, it can most closely be classified as a horror film. It is certainly not for the faint of heart.

Nevertheless, “Titane” was very well received by the international film community. Director Julia Ducournau was awarded the Palme d’Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2021–perhaps the highest honor a film can receive, alongside the Oscar.

Despite all its grotesqueness, the award is an artistic accolade and rightly elevates “Titane” to more than just a shocker. The international press saw it similarly upon release. On Metacritic, for example, the average rating from all considered reviews is a very good 75 points.

The situation is similar on Rotten Tomatoes. There, a strong 90 percent of all 260 reviews are positive. Additionally, the platform’s users also give it an excellent 85 percent–such agreement between fans and the press is not very common.
