For those who enjoy watching movies and series, Amazon offers more than just Prime Video. While the selection is already immense, it’s worth checking out the various additional channels for some hidden gems. These do cost extra but often provide specially curated content for unique tastes. Apple TV also offers such channels. Soon, the 1990s erotic thriller “Sliver” will be available.

What “Sliver” Is About

Editor Carly Norris moves into the exclusive Manhattan high-rise “Sliver.” Only after moving in does she learn about the mysterious death of her predecessor, who bore a striking resemblance to her. Among the neighbors are the enigmatic author Jack Lansford and owner Zeke Hawkins, with whom Carly soon becomes close.

But Zeke harbors a disturbing passion: He secretly observes the building’s residents with cameras and numerous monitors. As Carly becomes more entangled in his world of control and voyeurism, more mysterious deaths occur.

“Sliver” Production Was Full of Problems

The plot reads like familiar and real horror stories about hidden cameras in vacation rentals. But the difficulties weren’t limited to the film itself–there were plenty of issues behind the scenes as well. For instance, the two stars, Sharon Stone and William Baldwin, couldn’t stand each other during filming.

In 2024, Stone also revealed in a podcast with Louis Theroux that producer Robert Evans suggested during the filming of “Sliver” that she should sleep with her co-star Baldwin off-screen to improve his performance and their on-screen chemistry, thus saving the film. However, the actress did not comply.

The age rating also caused problems before the film’s release. Due to the sex and nude scenes, the project was at risk of receiving an NC-17 rating in the U.S.–which would have been a commercial disaster from the start. According to a report by “Entertainment Weekly,” director Philip Noyce made 110 changes to avoid the high rating. This reportedly led to shouting matches during phone calls with the MPAA, the U.S. rating board.

Did it help? At least commercially, “Sliver” performed decently, grossing about $116 million against a budget of around $40 million. However, the reviews were scathing, with only a dismal 21 percent of professional reviews on Rotten Tomatoes being positive. The attempt to cast Sharon Stone in another erotic thriller in the wake of “Basic Instinct” was at least artistically unsuccessful.

For those still in the mood for some sizzling moments with a nostalgic ’90s vibe, “Sliver” might still be worth a shot. The film will be released on November 19, 2026, on Arthaus+, an additional channel on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV. The subscription costs 3.99 euros per month.
